Last February, Squirrel Lake Park was closed for renovations which lasted throughout the entire summer and are nearly complete. Squirrel Lake Park, located on Pleasant Plains Road in Matthews, featured an aged playground, fishing pond, a disc golf course, and a few shelters. The bathrooms consisted of a single porta-john which was fairly nasty. That being said, the park wasn’t overly crowded which made for a nice place for younger kids to play. The renovations are breathtaking.
Squirrel Lake Park now features two renovated open-air shelters, a proper entrance with stacked stone, three bathrooms along with a dog bar for the four-legged friends, and even a fishing pier. The parking lot has been paved and reconfigured to accommodate even more guests and the disc golf course remains.
The biggest improvement to Squirrel Lake Park are to the children’s playgrounds. Now, the playground features new swings, toddler rockers, teeter-totters, two large jungle gyms with multiple slides, and even a children’s climbing wall.
Work is still being completed with an official unveiling soon as well as a video of the park once everything is complete. For now, enjoy the photos.
Squirrel Lake Park is convenient to residents west of downtown Matthews and Stallings. Residents in the Ashley Creek neighborhood have direct access to the park through a trail while Thornblade residents can simply cross Pleasant Plains Road. It also serves as a half-way point along the Four Mile Creek Greenway, which starts in downtown Matthews at Matthews Elementary and ends on E. John Street.
